Please join us…

in wishing our friend, Cami McCormick, a full and speedy recovery. Cami is a journalist for CBSNews Radio. She has most recently been embedded with American soldiers in Afghanistan. She was seriously injured in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan on August 28.

Based on the information we have, she is conscious and recovering in a German hospital.

Cami, we hope to see you soon. St. John is a great place to recover!

SCUBA Program Canceled

Nostalgia kicks in when I learned the other day that the program through which I received my original SCUBA certification will be terminated as of 31 December 2008.  I know, the YSCUBA program is hardly as recognized or well-known as PADI, NAUI or even SUBEX.  In fact, I often received funny looks about my certification because the C-card looked like it could have been home-made.  Indeed, with a color printer and a laminating machine, I could have made a better-looking card.

Nonetheless, it is where I received my original open water certification so it makes me a little sad that, after 50 years, the program will be no more.

An Unexpected Vistor

Yesterday afternoon, Casey & I had an unexpected visitor.  Here he is:

I

The last picture is the iguana hanging out by the door to my office.  I think he’s pretty old; he was pretty slow to move around.  I call him Fred.

Haven’t seen him again today, but I’m keeping an eye out for him…

Turtle Video

Yesterday we took the new boat over to Dennis Beach to do some snorkeling. We saw a stingray (picture to come). However, we also saw a sea turtle. Here’s a video of it:

Again, be patient. It takes a while to load. Enjoy.

Casey Rebels

Well, it should come as a surprise to no one that Casey is not allowed to come with us to any many public places as she was in Zurich. She’s basically unwelcome in restaurants, stores, supermarkets and the most of the beaches which are part of the National Park. Sensing this, Casey has taken the matter into her own hands; she has decided that if she cannot go to these places with us, she’s going to…

DRIVE!

That’ll show ‘em. In fact, we took her with us to pick up a pizza the other night. When we went in to order the pizza and wait (almost an hour!) for it, little miss sunshine here scrambled to the front seat to watch us inside the restaurant. We thought it was a cute picture so we took it.

We have actually found a number of restaurants where Casey is welcome on the deck or outdoors. This is due, in part, to the fact that she is well-behaved. Perhaps in a future post we can give a plug to the sort-of pet-friendly places we’ve found.

In the meantime, keep off the streets of St. John, Casey’s drivin’!
